What Your DSLR CAN’T DO…BUT the SONY a9 II CAN?

NEW FroPack 2 Lightroom Presets
(40% off)

I took the Sony a9 ii out with the Sony 200-600mm lens to try and photograph Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam. I have to say the weather was terrible. It was 34 degrees, 15-20 mile per hour wind gusts with rain and snow at times. Not the most ideal weather for going out to shoot, but I still went out there.

***NOTE*** At 04:47 I discuss What a DSLR Can’t DO but the Sony a9 II Can. At this point you will see the bird almost completely out of the bottom portion of the frame yet it’s still in focus. NO that’s not a usable image but the fact that you can still have tracking with the bird outside of the actual frame means as you quickly recompose the autofocus will continue to track the subject. Whereas with a DSLR, if you lose the bird outside of the focus points, you will have a tougher time getting the autofocus to reacquire and track your subject. In no way am I saying you can’t photograph birds with a DSLR! Most nature photographers are using and have been using DSLR’s to capture birds for years. Again, I am pointing out the tracking capability edge to edge and the ability to stay on the subject even when the subject is barely in the frame.

  • Not a single camera out there that can keep up with the Sony A9 series with exception of the 1DXMIII which happens to be a DSLR!

  • It's like when you are in a deer blind with huge optics waiting on something across the field and one shows up right in front of you lol. "where is it, where is it"

  • Heard I am the Israeli Sam and I can say that you are a real pro wished I new 10% of what your brains has . What you saying makes sense . I love to watch your videos and from this video I made up my mind finally to buy the 200-600mm G lens and a Sony Alpha a9II I am selling bunch of things that I do not need on eBay to try to pay cash for these items I am trying to get the best price B&H gave me only $100 on the camera and nothing on the lens . I can buy both on Payboo save about $500 in taxes . Thank you for this great video .

  • hey Jared great video very impressive.  I am new to this camera stuff.  I would love to get your advice on getting a camera that can capture an arrow that is flying through the air at 300 feet per second in slow motion.  I know most cameras can shoot slow motion but I want to be able to see the archers paradox on an arrow. can you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

  • I'm kind of novice at this but I would prefer a super good 61MP shot even if you have less chances than have many many chances with 24MP?

  • If we one day have those anti-missile air defense equipment they use in the military for subject tracking at our level, it would be too awesome.

  • I was at Conowingo December 3 – 7, 2019 and shot mostly with the a7RIV + 600mm f/4 although I also had the a9 + 100-400 GM with me. The eagles were too far out for the a9 rig most of the time. Got a few good shots … https://flic.kr/s/aHsmJP3pdt

  • For wildlife photography
    Nikon d850+500mm
    Sony a7iii +600mm
    Which one is good
Sir plz choose me a good one or suggest any other combination

  • Handholding?! But why? I guess you have to work out to do stuff like that. Why no gimbal mount on a tripod? In the initial pics you showed of the area some of the other photographers were using gimbal mounts.

  • @JaredPolin I have an A9 for concert photography but need a second body. Which of the following would you do?
    1. Buy an A7RIV now and keep the A9
    2. Wait for an A7SIV and keep the A9
    3. Upgrade to an A9II and get an A7III
    4. Upgrade to an A9II and wait for an A7IV
I am mostly thinking of doing #1 or #4

  • Literally all of these shots could have been taken with a DSLR. I’ve been regularly going to Conowingo for about three years now and I’ve been able to capture images like that as well as TONS of pickup shots at water level with complex backgrounds handheld at 600mm and 840mm. I’ve done it with a 7D Mark II, a 1DX, and a 1DX Mark II. People walk away from there every day with those shots using D500’s and 200-500’s or Tamron 150-600’s. The shots with the bird at the bottom of the frame are possible with a DSLR because you’re basically shooting parallel down at the bird, the focal plane isn’t changing that drastically like it would be if the bird was coming straight at you. Don’t get me wrong the a9 is incredible and I’m currently shooting with one but I’m doing so because of more consistent AF when tracking subjects in front of a complex background with which Canon DSLR’s have always struggled (Nikon’s are much better at that). People have been taking award-winning flight shots with Nikon and Canon DSLR’s for years, just because mirrorless is better in some ways doesn’t mean those cameras are incapable of taking incredible photos, although the person behind the camera might be.

  • I need to know if you would choose this any day, over the a7r iv … I need to make this decision for these shots, I want to crop hard, I almost want to just wait until the a9 has more megapixels

  • Yes, you are a wedding singer/photographer. It means you are not really a singer or a photographer. kind of sad, the video has no useful info at all and it collected thousands of clicks.

  • I usually like your picture but this one are not really appreciable dude… And that preset look really bad

  • i checked all the sample Raw images. All the images doesn't have any data, if i zoom it. lot of grains, really i dint expect this. its very difficult to work with those images. sorry to say this, bad images. why, what happen jared…

  • If it's so easy to capture such wonderful shots, then where's the challenge to take real good photos? It all becomes a money game – expensive equipment
