  • Yes but what we need to know about GameMaker Studio, is that many game development company's are now hiring people who already have some experience with the software because its a powerful tool that can even build some awesome games for not only PC but also on MAC, Linux, IOS, Xbox, and PlayStation

  • I say if you want to be a programmer, avoid game engines like the plague. Unity3d game engine is fine if you want to go pro.
    If you just want to make a game, are free to use whatever you want. I value being a programmer so I would avoid game makers. In truth, I think you should learn to write a simple game engine so you can understand what Game Engine actually do behind the seen.
    True Developers learn Algorithms and if you fail to learn how they work, it would be difficult to become a good programmer.

  • Great advice here, it just depends on the goal. I just wanna say though, I only used scripting in game maker to make my game. I couldn't see myself using the tedious drag and drop or buying premade scripts. I think I made quite a complicated prototype for a game maker game and that you can make complex games in it. I just think the name Game Maker gives it an impression that you don't need to put any effort in it. Which you can… if you wanna make a bad game. Anyway, I really when you make videos about game dev, I'd love to see more of this. Great answer and video.

I did computer science degree within course I was good in programming conceptually and got good grades in c/c++, java and c# but were not able to design solution to real world problem. I mean I could not transit from demo programming in class assignment to real world problem to work for clients. What I need to do how can I transit to real programming. Once I asked a professor he told me that you know the grammar of programming but you don't know How to program to provide the solution to client demand. What I am missing and how to deal with this problem.you always talk about choosing the small real problem and play with that problem to improve your skills for instance I always to think to make analog watch using code, research online but I always stuck couldn't bring the steps or instruction to start programming of this small app that's why I give-up now very bad isn't it. I am very found of sourceforge[Dot]net and currently I want to be game developer, but you know I need a good practical background in programming. can you help me? please guide me if possible. I feel like mute: close-mouthed in computer world without computer language. thanks

  • Go for GameMaker. I used it to make this games https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ulvgames.mrturtley . You can write code if you want to have more control. It uses the GML language (GameMakerLanguage).

  • Agree with John. Unity 3D is the way to go unless you have a passion for C++. I've tried to make a little game engine for fun as an exercise, you learn a whole lot!!!

  • As someone who has years of experience with GameMaker, Unity and pure programming i would say go Unity. Why? Because it is a fast way to make game like gamemaker, but you program using c# or js, so you also use programming languages which you can use in a other context. Also if you do not want this do not go the python way. Python is really slow and with games that does actually matter.

  • Unity is ideal for 2D, and as far as working on AAA titles there are a lot of jobs out there for C++ and Unreal Engine.

  • You need to specialize, in my opinion. "Game development" is way too general. Look up the credits of whatever game and you'll see tons of artists, sound people, programmers, etc each specializing in some aspect of that field

  • I started making a game with gamemaker and weeks into the project gamemaker 2 released. Meaning that gamemaker 1 was pretty mcuh "canceled" so that you cant download it from their official website on a new device. In order for you to try gamemaker 2. The problem is that the free version of gamemaker 2 has SOO FEW available objects that its impossible to make anything of value… Pretty much killed my will to continue with the project. It still exists though… maybe sometime…

  • Unity3D used to be limited to – well – 3D; you would fake 2D via an orthographic camera. That's no longer the case.

  • EXACT topic on my mind just now: decided to just work hard on unity and chill with game maker for fun on the side.
